Steam is not abrasive and won't cut or damage materials. Many ice dam removal companies CLAIM they are using steam but in fact are running high P.S.I power washers that cannot produce steam temperatures. These machines are very dangerous on roofing materials and cannot safely undercut the ice from the roof without damage.

Companies with pressure washers usually insist that their equipment will not harm your roof, but actually water is abrasive and will remove sand/limestone from the shingles which can lead to roof failure.
